I decided to shed light on a few fads I’ve been noticing recently in the media and blogosphere.
1) Body Pump
Have seen lots of Tweets about this but have no idea what it is…it sounds like a love child between
Joe Budden
and Technotronic
Care to enlighten a sistah?
2) Interesting Acceptance Speeches
Exhibit A: Catherine Zeta-Jones’ flusteredspeech after her Tony Award win this week, where she even points to Michael Douglas and identifies him as the “movie star I get to sleep with every night”, which rather than owning, she later calls “crass”.
Exhibit B: Ron Artest’s speech was just an icing on the cake of the Lake show clinching the championship! I love that he thanks his psychiatrist (ain’t no shame in that) and “all of the people in my hood”.
3) Green Monsters
I get it, you like a good smoothie infused with roughage. I do, too. But can we please give them a new name? For lack of a better (and less annoying) phrase, this term has jumped the shark.
What fads have you noticed recently?
Do you like them or do they irk you?

Well, I must admit to following the Green Monster and chia seed fads. And I’ve yet to try Body Pump, but am totally going to the first class at my gym next week. It’s basically an aerobic strength training class with a small barbell, from what I’ve gathered. I dunno. It just sounds like a bitchin’ workout that’s supposed to deliver good results, so I’m game.
Some trends kinda irritate me, but there are so many and some of them last for such a short time that I quickly forget about them and said irritation. At the same time though, I kinda like fads, be they food or fitness related because I get bored easily and am always looking for new things to try.

Aha so that’s what body pump is!!! Definitely let me know how you like it
Yes I hear you on it being great to learn about new health tips and fads via the Internet even though I have an even shorter attention span than most when it comes to them.
We just need a new name for the Green Monster!

My mom is OBSESSED with Body Pump. She swears by it as a way to do full body strength training just twice a week and get good results. I’ve never done it, but I think it must be addictive. There is definitely a “cult of body pump” out there.
I think Bananas are a blog trend lately. Can fruits be trendy? lol I’m not sure.

RE: Body Pump: I don’t go to one of those cool gyms that actually keep up with fitness trends, so I’m just as lost as you are. Thanks Bally Total Fitness for spending ZERO DOLLARS in the past ten years on your clubs. I much prefer your definition though!
RE: Green Monsters: I personally do not do smoothies, so I will never be a follower on this one.
Lately, I feel like the new fad is signing up to do a triathlon. Really?! Who has that much time?!

Fruits can definitely be trendy…bananas had better be thankful for spinach because the Green Monster majorly upped their street cred.
Speaking of bananas, I feel bad for the plantain-what an under recognized yummy fruit!
Re: triathlons, I have a ton of respect for anybody who takes all of the time to train for and complete them. For me, as a ridiculously claustrophobic person, I am breaking out in hives just picturing the crowded open water swim and the transitions. Not to mention, I haven’t ridden a bike that isn’t stationary in about 15 years.
Another trendy workout seems to be Zumba…which I still haven’t tried but am curious about.

I called them “Green Monsters” for a while but now I just refer to them as “green smoothies” or “spinach smoothies”. I mean, who is the big-headed blogger who “invented” this and was like “WHOA MONSTER SMOOTHIE BECAUSE I SHOVED SPINACH IN IT” .

Try Zumba. Trendy or not, it’s fun. It’s not a rough n tumble workout, but I feel it the next day.
