Wrapper’s Delight

I have to make a confession that might not go over well at all: I have never understood the hype behind wraps!!

I am a big panini fan, which I think is in large part because hearty, doughy bread is hands down my favorite carbohydrate and I can’t get behind using a bland cold tasteless receptacle for flavorful toppings. Give me a good foccacia, olive bread, multigrain or cornbread over a flour tortilla any day!

The only time I get semi excited about a wrap is if falafel is involved…well that is until today.

Before I give up the food porn, let me give you the backstory first.

After doing a giveaway for a gift certificate to awesome online boutique Alternative Outfitters, I was having some major envy over all the cute items so I knew a trip to the showroom was in order!

My friend Jen and I met co-founder Jackie at the showroom this morning and felt like kids in a candy store.

We made it out with some incredible buys, including this purse I am so stoked about!

I maintain that shopping is my favorite form of cardio so of course I managed to work up an appetite! At Jackie’s recommendation, we lunched at Green Earth, a new-ish restaurant in old-town Pasadena (which is so cute!)

While the menu was incredibly diverse, ranging from dishes inspired by different countries in Asia, to salads, to pasta dishes to sandwiches, there was one item that was screaming my name.

I knew I had to have the sprouts sandwich which was filled with avocado, hummus, pesto, sprouts, tomatoes and grilled soy chicken. Well had to have until I found out the only bread they had was a rye bread…and as much as I wish I could say I’ve never met a bread I didn’t like, rye is the exception to that rule.

I must have looked like a kid who had just learned there was no Santa Claus, because Jackie suggested I get it as a wrap. I mulled the idea over for a minute and decided that I would brave my distaste for wraps in order to try a sandwich with my three favorite condiments.

I couldn’t even speak coherent sentences while I proceeded to devour the best wrap I have ever eaten.

Somehow in the midst of food euphoria, I remembered to take a photo:

I absolutely licked the plate clean and find it highly unlikely that I will ever find a better wrap than this. It was moist, perfect ratio of each topping and delicious beyond words.

Are you a fan of wraps or are you more of a sandwich person?

What is the best thing you’ve eaten all week?

Do you view shopping as a good form of cardio?

  1. I love wraps, but only because I like eating the insides first then tearing the wrap apart and eating all the bready goodness. People don’t like eating with me because I play with my food, tearing it apart and eating it all weird. Oh well.

  2. I love wrapping nearly all of my food in a tortilla. Cottage cheese and hot sauce in a whole wheat tortilla is one of my faves. Don’t judge.

  3. Yeah, I don’t get the wrap-for-the-sake-of-wrapping thing either. But that’s because I go all crack-head for bread and would rather have the pillow, starchy, crunchy, crumby real thing–so when I go on a crazy carbo bender like today, I know I at least enjoyed what eventually drove me to eat the contents of my fridge.

    I mean, I love bread.

  4. As someone who loves both wraps and bread, this is a pretty serious topic for me. The thing I really appreciate about wraps is that they enable the wrap-eater to get right down to the fillings. To me, a wrap is really just a means to taking in hummus, veggies, and soy meat all in one satisfying bite. Now, when I eat bread, I like to go all out and eat French baguette dipped in olive oil, or I’ll have slices of rosemary-olive loaf, or something similarly fancy. It’s like I have to savor one thing at a time – contents of a sandwich/wrap *or* just bread itself. To combine is to distract, unless we’re talking about Locali’s vegan reuban, in which case all of my previously mentioned preferences are out the window.

The wrap you had sounds frickin’ amazing….!

And I totally count shopping as cardio. Plus weight-lifting if you end up carrying heavy shopping bags around. ;)

    • You put it perfectly! I couldn’t quite articulate it in my food coma haze, but yes, the wrap is the way to go when you are most focused on the filling. And the bread route is for when you feel like being a purist or could take or leave the fillings.

Would you believe I have never been to Locali??? I keep hearing awesome things about their Big A** Breakfast Sandwich too!

  5. I tend to overstuff my wraps and they wind up being filling-on-top-of-tortilla salady type things. Even the best tasting wraps are nothing compared with the filling. Bread on the other hand is a food group unto itself.

  6. I read this on my phone last week but saved it so I could come back and comment…that wrap looks AMAZING!! And I’m glad that you could reconsider a food you normally didn’t like. I love when that happens!! It’s all about context…that’s how I learned to like tomatoes!
