Dare I Say I Finally Found A Pickle That I Like??

I really enjoy quizzing people about food aversions especially because I have several themselves. In fact, a guy I dated once jokingly called me a food brat, which is ironic because I am really not a picky eater at all.

Before I went veg, I had major beef with cottage cheese, caviar and bleu cheese (for the first two foods it is a textural thing and for the third, the smell and taste make me physically ill).

However, the two foods that have carried over as no-gos into my my 30 year old palate are yellow mustard and pickles.

I’ve told you all the nitty gritty details about how much I loathe yellow mustard but pickles is one I’ve never been able to explain. I like cucumbers, I like vinegar…I know, doesn’t make sense but my distaste is severe: I can’t even eat anything that has touched a pickle.

When I went to India and saw their pickles, which are often made from citrus, mango, etc and covered with a red sauce, I decided I’d give one a whirl (see dish on far right of below picture).

While I was in no way, shape or form prepared for how pungent the sauce would be, there was something about the flavor that had me eating their pickles any time they were offered in a meal. My most favorite were garlic pickles which I sadly did not get a picture of (yep the garlic cloves form the pickles).

While my favorite Indian snack remains papadum (photo below), Indian pickles are a great condiment.

Do you have any food aversions?

Anyone have a good Indian pickle recipe?

Hi, Bess! It’s almost un-vegan to admit this, but I don’t like eggplant. I try it every summer, hoping my tastes will have changed but so far they haven’t. It’s definitely a textural thing for me. BTW, I’m not a pickle fan either but that garlic pickle was amazingly delicious!
