There are definitely die-hard proponents of each type of workout, many claiming that one is more important than the other. It’s true that cardio and strength training each offer very different styles of exercise and benefits to the body. In reality, it’s important to include both of these in your workout regimen if you want to maintain balance in your health and body. Read on for more info on this highly debated topic.

What are your workout goals?

If you want to figure out which type of exercise is going to be best for you, first look at your workout goals. Are you trying to lose weight, or tone your body? Are you training for a specific event? The answers to these questions will eventually determine what type of exercise is going to be best for you. Minute for minute, cardio burns more calories than strength training, so it’s generally the way to go if you want to lose weight. But building muscle helps you burn more calories during the cardio sessions, because muscle burns more than fat does. So the ideal workout plan for weight loss includes a balanced combination of the two.

What are you burning?

Many people exercise because they want to burn fat. But when you do only cardio, there’s a good chance that you’re burning just as much muscle as fat, which is counterproductive in the long run. You want to to ideally maintain your muscle while burning only that extra stubborn fat. Strength training is the way to burn fat, while building on your muscles and toning up. When you gain muscle, you’ll be able to actually burn more fat through cardio sessions like running, biking or working on the elliptical.

Combine the two

Exercises which combine cardio and strength training are excellent choices for a well-balanced workout regimen. Machines like the stair master are great because not only are you burning calories through cardio, but your thigh muscles are getting a great workout as well. Running stairs and including intervals and cross-training is a great way to achieve this as well. You can decrease the amount of time you need to spend at the gym by putting a focused effort into your cardio and strength training for a shorter amount of time. Remember: it’s all about qualtiy over quantity when it comes to your workout session. And a balance of cardio and strength training is the best way to achieve the results you desire.
